How To Make A Simple Animation

If you have Photoshop you should be also able to make some simple anamations. Not video animations, you need whole another program for those, but I mean simple animations where you can make different pics change text or fade into each other. In this little tutorial I have written down some basics on how to do that. Hope you find it useful!

So let’s begin…First check if your Photoshop has a program called ImageReady. That’s what you need to do animations. You can check it easily, just open your Photoshop and you should have this kind of button on your tools bar:

Just click on it and wait till it opens another program to you what  kinda looks like another Photoshop. Don’t close your Photoshop though. I’m used to working in Photoshop and ImageReady at the same time, so that’s how we’re gonna do it in this tutorial too. Of course later on you can do it all in Image Ready alone. I think it’s just easier to explain that way.

Ok so now go to your Photoshop and open the pics you wanna use. I suggest you not to make too big animation cause since you save it as .gif later the quality might not be the best. For this tutorial i chose these three Kelly pics (the main reason why i picked those is that in the end we can have head-turning and smiling Kelly. The pics doesn’t have to be from same photshoot and they don’t have to match at all. You can make animations with all kinds of pics. I just picked these. I’ve also added some brightness/contrast effect and a border to the pics before):

Now that we’ve got the pics, let’s say we want the last one to say ’Blender Buddies’, then we add the text before we start doing the animation. Remeber: all the effects and text need to be done before.

Now let’s take the first pic. Make sure your first pic is active and click on that ImageReady button. It should take your first pic to ImageReady. Now in ImageReady check that your animation box is seen. If it isn’t go Windows -> Animation. Now you should have a box like this in your ImageReady (also check that when you click on that little arrow up in the right corner in animation box, that your settings would be like that ):

Click on ’Duplicate’ button

Now that you have two pics in your animation box, make sure the second one is active.

Now open your Photshop window again and copy the second pic, then open your ImageReady window and past your second pic onto the first one (just paste it into same layer). You can’t have two different pics in ImageReady after this, only one, the first one can’t be seen, you must have second pic over it. And your animation box should look like this (if it doesn't, it means you’ve done something wrong, go through all the steps again):

Now while your second animation frame is still active, click duplicate layer again. You’ll have this:

Now make sure your third frame is active and repeat the same thing with third pic as you did with second. Copy it in Photshop and paste it onto second pic in ImageReady (you still must only have one pic layer in ImageReady, you mustn’t have pics seperatedly). In the end your animation box should look like this:

Now if you want a simple animation with pics just changing then you can just play around with time delay, try what looks the best (here i chose 1 second) and then just hit the play button in animation box, then you see how your animation looks like.

And after that simply save it (File ->Save -> Save Optimized As…). And you should have this:

But if you don’t want that simple animation and you want to make the pics fade into each other, just leave the time delay to 0, don’t change anything. From here on i’ll teach how to make them fade into each other.

Now make the first frame in your animation box active and find a button called ’tween’:

Click on it and a new box should pop up. Set it like this (of course you can change the setting when you make more animations in the future, but right now in this tutorial i use these settings):

Then click ok.

If you set the settings just like did, you should have 13 frames in your animation box.

Now make your second pic active, it should be in frame nr. 12 (if you did it like me). Over here i mean second pic out of those 3 pics we use in the animation. And that second pic should be in frame 12.

(In the furture you can do tween right after you’ve pasted a pic, so you don’t have to search for next pic, it's much easier that way, if you understand what I mean).

Make sure it’s active and click on tween again, only this time i suggest you to set ’frames to add’ box to 20 instead of 10  and then click ok again.

Now you should have 33 frames in your animation box if you’ve done everything like me.

Click on the very last frame.

And now click the tween button again.

This time set ’tween with’ to ’first frame’ so that the third pic would fade into first and your animation could start all over again. And leave ’frames to add’ to 20.

That was a quite hard part that i can’t really show with pics but i hope you understood.

Now you can try to click on play button in your animation box so you can see how your animation looks like.

Then go File ->  Save -> Save Optimized As… and name it however you want to. Now if you upload it to somewhere, you can see your animation (you can’t see it simply by watching it with Microshop Photo Editor or something). And if you’ve done everything right, the result should looks like this:

This was the basic stuff on how to do animation. There are definitely more things you can do there, just be creative and try to discover your photoshop.
